Magic Shadows

The day the storm came, the hospital lights flickered like fireflies in a jar. In a small delivery room, two newborn girls lay side by side, their tiny fists curled, their cries thin but fierce. Outside, rain hammered the windows, and thunder rolled so close it felt like the sky was shaking its fist at the earth.

The first twin had a head full of damp crimson hair — and every time the lightning flashed, those red hairs shone brighter, like tiny threads of fire woven into gold. The second twin had soft brown hair that darkened toward the tips, almost leaning into a dusky purple. As if someone had dipped the ends in twilight.

Then the world turned white. A deafening crack split the air. A single, thin finger of lightning slipped past plaster and wiring — as if it had been searching — and touched the metal railing of the twins' crib.

No one saw it clearly. Later, the staff would say it was a surge, a power glitch, a strange reflection. But in that instant, the twins' eyes snapped open. One pair a startling sea-blue, the other a warm, deep emerald flecked with gold. For a heartbeat, the nurse swore she saw a faint glow around them, soft as candlelight.

Then the lights went out.

When power returned, everything looked normal. The doctor checked the girls from head to toe — no burns, no marks, no signs that lightning had come anywhere near them. "Lucky," he said, shaking his head. "Storm hit the building and they slept through it. Very lucky."

They were named Stella and Lucky. Years passed, and the story of the storm-born twins became nothing more than a family anecdote. They didn't notice how rain always seemed to soften around them. They didn't notice how candles never burned out too quickly at their birthday parties. They had never told anyone about the strange little things that happened — not their parents, not even each other.

But as another storm rolled in on their sixteenth year, something inside them stirred. Something that felt like waking up.

The twins didn't know that lightning had once claimed them, brushed their crib and whispered into their bones. They didn't know that a spark slept beneath their skin, waiting for a storm bold enough to call it out again. They only knew that the storm was coming — ready to remind two lightning-marked twins, and the blond-haired girl who would stand beside them, that they were not, and had never been, just regular girls.
